June is graduation time for our seniors. I plan on attending ten commencement ceremonies. At ceremonies where the members of the dais wear robes, I will too. The color on the edge of the master's hood represents the discipline in which the degree was awarded. Here is a fairly comprehensive list:
Color Discipline
White: arts and letters
Scarlet: theology
Purple: law
Green: medicine
Dark blue: philosophy
Golden yellow: science
Brown: architecture and the fine arts
Pink: music
Lilac: dentistry
Orange: engineering
Olive: pharmacy
Light brown: business
Lemon yellow: library service
Light blue: education
Peacock blue: international and public affairs
Citron yellow: social work
Cardinal: journalism
Salmon pink: public health
Apricot: nursing
The interior of the hood displays the colors of the college or university that conferred the degree (i.e. Orange & Blue for UVA and Chicago Maroon & Burnt Orange for Virgina Tech).
In addition to ten high schools, we'll also have ceremonies honoring graduates of the CS Monroe Technology Center, and our Adult Education program. All of the high schools are sponsoring all-night parties to keep our students safe.
I will be taking pictures at all the graduations I attend and will post them on this blog.
